Push Up Test

Introduction

If you are looking to measure upper body strength, performing a push up test is likely one of the important assessments you should be doing. One of the most difficult physical tests for many, this exercise utilises most of the major upper body muscle groups.

What is the point?

The primary objective of a push up test is to test the ability of the individual's endurance capacity of the upper body muscles while   also testing their strength. Since in order to properly perform this action you need to have some strength development, obviously   that will be of first concern. Then once you have achieved this strength, you can work on improving your endurance capacity and   improving how you do on the assessment itself.

The objective of the push up test is to build and evaluate the strength of the major muscle groups in your upper body.

What do you need?

  • A flat surface

  • A mat

How do you do the test?

  • To start you want to lie on the mat with your hands about shoulder width apart and fully extended.

  • Once you are in this position you will then begin to lower the body until the elbows are at a 90 degree angle.

  • Hold this position for a very brief second and then push the body up again until you return to the start.

  • Continue on for a second rep without any break in between.

  • Your goal is to perform as many as you can while still maintaining proper form.

If you are slightly weaker, you can perform the assessment in the same way only you will place the knees on  the ground (slightly bent with ankles raised and crossed) to make the movement easier on yourself.

What results you'll get :

Once you have the results of this test, you can then use it to judge how well you are progressing with your strength training routine. If  you are able to do more and more each assessment, you know you are making progress.

What is being measured again?

This test measures the strength and endurance of the major muscle groups of the upper body, and consequently evaluates your training program.
